New on Sports Illustrated:

Colleges have asked student athletes to sign waivers that protect schools from lawsuits if a player contracts the coronavirus. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduced legislation Tuesday to prohibit colleges from forcing athletes to sign coronavirus liability waivers as they return to campus. CBS Sports reported Monday that Blumenthal and Booker drafted the bill after sending a letter to NCAA president Mark Emmert last week expressing "grave concern" for athletes being forced "to sign away their right to hold their school accountable." Colleges across the country have asked student athletes to sign these waivers that protect schools from lawsuits if a player contracts the coronavirus. The waivers emerged shortly after college football programs first began welcoming athletes back for voluntary workouts. Ohio State, SMU, Indiana, Iowa and others have asked players to sign waivers or "pledges" in order to begin workouts. S...

Will other D-II schools, or even D-I, follow in the footsteps of Morehouse football and forgo the 2020 season? David Thomas isn’t your normal academic. President of one of the nation’s most esteemed Black colleges, Thomas once played center and linebacker on the football field and, as a foreign-exchange student, competed overseas in basketball. He realizes the cultural significance of sports and understands its place in the world. That’s why his decision to cancel Morehouse College’s 2020 football season is so jarring. While hundreds of NCAA universities feverishly debate contingency plans to play football around a pandemic, Thomas last week ended all discussion on the topic at his Division II school in Atlanta. More than two months before the season was scheduled to kickoff, he pulled the plug. Though unrelated, Morehouse’s announcement Friday came amid unrest in the college sports world, as well as the nation. COVID-19 cases are surging across the country, with at least five sta...

The Golden Gophers were one of college football’s feel-good stories of 2019 after starting the season 9-0. SI Gambling insider Frankie Taddeo previews the Gophers’ upcoming season win total, Big Ten odds, and reveals his best bet. The Minnesota Gophers had a very successful 11–2 season, culminated by a 31-24 upset victory over SEC power Auburn in the Outback Bowl . Head coach P.J. Fleck piloted the club to a strong 2019 season that has galvanized hefty aspirations in 2020.  On the offensive side of the ball, Minnesota’s will be led by star wideout Rashod Bateman and quarterback Tanner Morgan. The success of the 2020 season will hinge upon the shoulders of Morgan, who sees his name as a sleeper in Heisman Trophy wagering. Morgan will undoubtedly focus on getting the ball to one of the elite receivers in the country in Bateman; as he looks to build on his 60 receptions for 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2019. Minnesota will have tremendous holes to fill on the defense sid...

As COVID-19 threatens the college football season, what if we blew up the system entirely? Welcome to the Forde Bowl Subdivision. Ten years ago this month, the last great spasm of realignment began shaking the college sports world. When it finally subsided in 2014, the landscape had changed dramatically. For the richer, but not necessarily for the better. The Big Ten wound up with 14 teams, stretching from Nebraska to New Jersey. The Southeastern Conference expanded into Texas and Missouri. The Atlantic Coast Conference wandered nearly 1,000 miles inland. The Pac-12 annexed the Rocky Mountains. The Big 12, pushed to the brink of collapse, steadied itself by adding a school 1,200 miles to the northeast of the league office. Lesser conferences followed suit, scrambling for financial viability. A decade later, it’s time to blow up what was done and start over. The COVID-19 pandemic’s effects have been profoundly felt in a realm where, for 10 years, money was no object and the map mad...

New on Sports Illustrated:

The school also will not compete in cross country, its other fall sport. Morehouse, an HBCU located in Atlanta, has canceled its 2020 fall sports, including football, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The school also will not compete in cross country, its other fall sport. In a letter to the Morehouse community , president David A. Thomas said the school will honor athletic scholarships. "Like all of the decisions we've made related to COVID-19, this was a difficult one but was made with the health and well-being of our students and community in mind. It follows my intention to maintain a safe campus in hopes that our students will be able to return in August," Thomas said in the letter.  "Our Maroon Tiger teams travel to other NCAA institutions and cannot compete without breaking from social distancing guidelines still maintained by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sporting events also invite individuals to our campus who will not be subject to th...

New on Sports Illustrated:

Oregon and Oregon State announced Friday that the term "Civil War" will no longer be used to promote athletic competitions between the two schools. Oregon and Oregon State announced Friday that the term "Civil War" will no longer be used to promote athletic competitions between the two schools. The change is effective immediately. "Changing the name is overdue as it represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery," OSU president Ed Ray said in a statement. "While not intended as a reference to the actual Civil War, OSU sports competition should not provide any misconstrued reference to this divisive episode in American history. That we did not act before to change this name was a mistake. We do so now, along with other important actions to advance equal opportunity and justice for all in recognition that Black Lives Matter." The decision was made following mutual discussions with university officials at both schools and input...
