Moving the 2020 college football season should be a last resort, and we're not close to that point yet. If you want a vivid illustration of the Nobody Knows Anything world in which we all currently reside, just look at the vacillating outlook surrounding the 2020 college football season. Last week there was a surge in opinions that an on-time, on-schedule season is virtually impossible and should be put off until 2021. But this week there was a surge of schools saying they are planning for on-campus classes in the fall semester —including more than a dozen FBS schools. That would seem to heighten the chances of football as semi-usual. So this seems like a good time to look at the calendar. Then look at it again. Now take a deep breath and relax. The calendar still says April, right? Not May, not June, not July. April is not the time to make decisions or declarations about moving the 2020 college football season to the 2021 side of the academic schedule. We may, eventually,...

The lack of group licensing allowed under the NCAA's new name, image and license recommendations would make video games and replica jerseys "unworkable." The NCAA Board of Governors is moving toward allowing student-athletes to be compensated from their  name, image and likeness , but EA's 'NCAA Football' video game is unlikely to make a return.  The NCAA Board of Governors  has moved toward allowing student-athletes to be paid for sponsorships and endorsement deals as early as the 2021-22 academic year. However, the co-chair of that group, Big East commissioner Val Ackerman, said the new guidelines would not allow student-athletes to be represented in video games with school licensing. "It was the group’s conclusion that group licenses, which would combine school trademarks with student-athlete NIL in products like video games, replica jerseys and trading card collections are unworkable in college sports, largely because of the absence of a collect...

New on Sports Illustrated:

If passed, the recommendations could go into effect in the 2021-22 academic year. The NCAA Board of Governors is moving toward allowing student athlete compensation and adopting recommendations from a NIL ( name, image and likeness ) working group to allow student athletes to be paid for sponsorships and endorsement deals as early as the 2021-22 academic year. The NCAA Board of Governors announced their support after a working group proposed the changes at a meeting on Tuesday . The recommendations, if adopted, would allow student athletes to benefit from their name, image and likeness from deals with third parties and businesses. The new rules would go into effect in 2021 if the NCAA passes legislation next January. “Throughout our efforts to enhance support for college athletes, the NCAA has relied upon considerable feedback from and the engagement of our members, including numerous student-athletes, from all three divisions,” Ohio State president Michael V. Drake said...

New on Sports Illustrated:

The suggested changes call for allowing student athletes to be paid for endorsements and sponsorships. An NCAA working group plans to suggest changes at a board meeting Tuesday that would allow student athletes to be paid for sponsorships and endorsements, according to ESPN . Six months ago, the NCAA Board of Governors tasked a working group with figuring out how student athletes could get paid but still draw a line between college and professional sports. The NCAA will have several months to review the recommendations and suggest changes before it goes to a vote, which would likely occur in January. According to ESPN, the working group plans to recommend several changes, including allowing student athletes to model apparel as long as it doesn't feature school logos. Athletes could potentially be paid to appear in advertisements and say they're in college but could not reveal which school they play for.  The possible rules recommendations reportedly include allowing athlet...

New on Sports Illustrated:

The Nick Saban era with Alabama has been full of success and even with sports at a pause Saban is still gaining accomplishments. Tua Tagovailoa was selected in the first round of the NFL Draft to the Miami Dolphins and Jalen Hurts was selected in the second round to the Philadelphia Eagles. Those two selections are the highest-drafted quarterback picks from the Saban-Alabama era.

New on Sports Illustrated:

Georgia's Kirby Smart weighed in on the number of SEC players drafted on Thursday night. On Thursday night, the SEC broke the NCAA/NFL record for the most first-round draft picks from a single conference, with 15. The previous conference record of 12 which the SEC also set in 2013 and matched in 2017. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said Friday that the success of the conference is a great "sales piece." "It's like the SEC Draft with two other teams in it," Smart said on ESPN's Paul Finebaum radio show. "That’s the way it’s going to be for the time to come if you look at the recruiting across our conference. The separation is becoming greater.” Smart added that players he recruits want to play in the "biggest games," in the "biggest places" and that the SEC provides that experience.  Joe Burrow became the first SEC player taken in 2020, when he was drafted first overall by the Cincinnati Bengals . Georgia offensive tackle...

New on Sports Illustrated:

The SEC made history during the 2020 NFL draft. With the Tennessee Titans' decision to select Georgia offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson, the Southeastern Conference has made NFL draft history.  Wilson became the 13th player selected from the conference, topping the previous conference record of 12 which the SEC also set in 2013 and matched in 2017. Joe Burrow became the first SEC player taken in 2020, when he was drafted first overall by the Cincinnati Bengals.  "I think we're all aware of that and aware that's not going to stop anytime soon in terms of how strong the conference is," Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn said earlier this week. "Everybody talks about the whole Power Five in general. The fun part in scouting, they may get a lot in terms of the first-day stuff, but there are guys from all over. ... "The SEC may lead the way early, but there will be good players selected in a bunch of rounds." Here's a list of the SEC players...
